Bento boxes were originally used to transport food to one’s outdoor job. They began as simple food containers, used to carry rice and other foods around, but during the Edo Period (1603–1868), they bento became a convenient way to carry food to school, work, excursions and other places and usually had different compartments to keep the food separate. Today, bento boxes are omnipresent in Japan; populating convenience stores, train stations, schools, offices, hanami parties and other occasions.
At this exciting yet intimate experience, you’ll get the chance to learn how to prepare delicious plant-based food from an expert group of mothers and grandmothers who have a wealth of experience in cooking. Your time in Kanagawa will begin with a simple lesson on useful and easy-to-learn Japanese for traveling.
After that, you will then learn about authentic Japanese home cooking from women who have had culinary knowledge passed down to them from generation to generation. One highlight of this experience is the opportunity to learn how to make plant-based karaage (Japanese fried “chicken”), egg omelet with a special Japanese pan, onigiri, konnyaku kinpira, spinach with sesame paste, green salad and miso soup. Upon finishing your bento, go ahead and eat your tasty homemade meal!

The class is held on the second floor of a detached house. Please refrain from partaking in this experience if you have difficulty climbing stairs. This experience is not wheelchair accessible.
