Experience Details

Hiroshimayaki (layered savory pancake) is a signature local dish in Hiroshima. While Osaka-style okonomiyaki is made from a batter base, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki or simply “Hiroshimayaki” is different in that the ingredients are layered. With “okonomi” meaning “as you like it” and “yaki” meaning “to grill,” you can enjoy making your very own Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki during this hands-on cooking class at the Okosta studio.

This okonomiyaki experience is brought to you by the makers of Otafuku Okonomiyaki Sauce, one of Japan’s biggest sauce and condiment companies. You can recognize their logo on sauce bottles emblazoned with the friendly face of Otafuku. Japanese supermarkets stock this sauce, and you can get to know the face during this interactive cooking class in Hiroshima. Now, Otafuku sauce is a widely popular condiment that is often slathered over delicious slabs of okonomiyaki.

The founder of the Otafuku okonomiyaki sauce started up business in the early 1920s, later selling the now-famous okonomiyaki sauce during the 1950s. Okonomiyaki became popular in the post-war period, evolving from a “one coin snack” known as “issen yoshoku,” after adding pork to the recipe. During the 1940s, okonomiyaki was mainly sold by street vendors and small scale restaurants before booming from the 1950s (cue Otafuku).

Learn about the history of okonomiyaki and make your own okonomiyaki during this fun and family-friendly experience. Choose your favorite toppings and the staff will teach you how to make Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. After your hard work, eat your pancake directly from the teppanyaki hotplate!

With special sauces catering to dietary requirements, there are vegetarian and halal options available making this experience inclusive and open to almost anyone! This cooking class is a collaborative activity that’s great for groups, as well.

The class was hands on, very enjoyable, and the method was well taught. Delicious results. I’d have liked some history of the dish and contents of the sauces.
