Experience Details
How can a place with no access to the sea become famous for its fish? Thanks to the rich, sweet meat of Nagano's regional “Shinshu” salmon, bred right here in Matsumoto! Sushi chefs may undergo ten years or more of rigorous training, but this experience gives guests a chance to step into the shoes of an expert sushi master for a day.
With an English-speaking guide and sushi master by your side, become a master chef for a day! Make fresh sushi, learn how to slice sashimi-grade fish, prepare shari (vinegared sushi rice), and hand-form your tasty sushi morsels.
After learning the ins and outs of nigiri sushi-making, you’ll get an introduction to another of Matsumoto's home-grown delicacies–fresh and authentic wasabi. Far from the paste in little green packs, you’ll grate real wasabi root and experience its natural aroma.
Once the hard work is done, enjoy the fruits of your sushi-making labor with a delicious, traditional Japanese meal featuring your very own sushi! Your Matsumoto feast includes eight types of sushi–including Shinshu salmon–fresh wasabi, tempura, and chawanmushi (savory egg custard). Add-ons of local Shinshu soba, tempura, miso soup, and more are available for those who have worked up an appetite and need extra fuel.
Matsumoto is a charming city in Nagano, known for its history, natural landscapes, and enticing blend of traditional and modern attractions.
