Step inside Nishijin Lifestyle Museum Tondaya, a 140-year-old machiya, to discover the elegance of traditional Kyoto in this experience that includes a guided tour and a delectable kaiseki dinner by candlelight. Located in Nishijin, the city's textile district, this townhouse, dating back to 1885, is painstakingly preserved. Every detail, from the architecture to the gardens, will make you feel like you've traveled through time to a bygone era of Japanese history.
You’ll begin your experience with a tour of the townhouse, where you'll learn the story of the family who built the house. Your host will also share insights into traditional Japanese culture, including customs passed down through generations. As you wander through the narrow entrance, across tatami flooring, and into the serene tea ceremony room, you'll learn about the history of this historical building, designated a national tangible cultural property in 1999 and an important building in the Kyoto cityscape in 2007.
After the tour, enjoy a kaiseki dining experience, the pinnacle of Japanese haute cuisine. Elegant and beautifully prepared, kaiseki is usually served on special occasions. Dishes are intricately crafted to reflect the seasons and served with exquisite tableware. Indulge in your kaiseki meal by candlelight against the picturesque backdrop of the interior garden set aglow by paper lanterns. Experience the local cuisine, history and culture in a 140-year-old machiya where the spirit of Kyoto's traditions and hospitality lives on today.
