Witness authentic sake brewing, designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, in a 300-year-old sake brewery in Kyoto. Then, prepare staple izakaya dishes to enjoy with pairings of some of Kyoto’s finest sake to truly understand just how versatile and diverse Japan’s national drink can be.
Kyoto is famous for its sake and is home to prolific sake brewing regions like Fushimi. On this tour, you’ll step inside Matsui Sake Brewery, located on the other side of the Kamo River across the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden in the Sakyo area. Here, you’ll get an exclusive glimpse into the inner workings of an active brewery with a history spanning over three centuries.
After touring the brewery, you will take part in an izakaya foods cooking class, where you’ll make staple dishes you’d find at Japanese gastropubs like oden or yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). Once the cooking is done, you’ll enjoy these dishes paired with three types of sake from Kyoto.

Meet your host in front of Matsui Sake Brewery, within 10 minutes of Demachiyanagi Station, which is approx. 30 minutes from JR Kyoto Station and 4 stops from Gion-Shijo Station. More detailed information and a Google Maps link will be provided upon booking.
Remarks
Please follow staff instructions at all times during the sake brewery tour.
To protect the fermentation process, participants are asked to refrain from eating natto, yogurt or other fermented food from the day before the visit.
Please wear clean, comfortable clothing and avoid fur or long-fiber materials. Please note that the brewery is kept at 10-20°C (50-68°F).
Please refrain from smoking, wearing perfume or scented body creams, or chewing gum or eating candy before entry.
Hairnets and shoe covers will be provided and must be worn by participants. Please note that the tour starts strictly on time.
