In this experience, you can bask in the magical atmosphere of Gion’s evening streets lit aglow by paper lamps, as a local guide takes you exploring some of the area’s historical sites and eating spots in this walking and food tour where you can experience and learn about traditional Japanese culture.
Experience flow:
- Your first stop will be Yasaka Shrine. One of Gion’s quintessential landmarks, the shrine looks particularly magical lit aglow by lanterns in the evening. Your host will provide insights about the history of this shrine and share some of its most scenic spots.
- Next, you’ll stroll the streets of Gion until you reach a tucked izakaya, where you’ll savor authentic Japanese foods like karaage (fried chicken), sashimi and tempura and enjoy the cozy atmosphere of a small and quaint local eatery. If you’re curious to try Kyoto’s famous sake, be sure to ask your guide for recommendations and clink glasses to an unforgettable evening.
- You’ll walk off your first meal with a stroll through the Gion Shirakawa area, known for its breathtaking beauty and traditional sights. Here, you’ll visit a local shrine often frequented by geishas, where your host will teach you about local customs and etiquette as you immerse yourself in geisha culture.
- Explore Pontocho, a narrow street with traditional restaurants where you’ll enjoy your second and last meal at another izakaya.
