Sushi Mitsuyoshi
A Shinjuku hideaway offering authentic Edomae sushi with an extensive drinks menu, including sake, shochu and even champagne.
Restaurant Details
A relative newcomer to Shinjuku’s Edomae sushi scene, Sushi Mitsuyoshi has what it takes to stand up there with the best. Its chef offers authentic, traditional Edomae sushi prepared with expert skill and fresh ingredients. In line with the changing seasons, the menu changes monthly, with the chef making sure to offer his guests whatever happens to be freshest and most in season at the time.
Various simmered, stewed and grilled dishes accompany the nigiri in its course menus, showcasing both the high quality of the ingredients and the impeccable skill of the chef. A short course is also offered in the evening, letting those strapped for time or with smaller appetites enjoy a tasting of top-tier Edomae sushi without having to set aside the two-plus hours usually required for a full omakase course.
But Sushi Mitsuyoshi finds its repeat customers come back just as much for the selection of drinks as they do the sushi. The standard menu has 10 rotating types of sake to choose from — with Niigata’s Kakurei being a particular favorite — as well as several different types of shochu and whiskey both domestic and foreign, such as Black Nikka, Hakushu and the increasingly rare Yamazaki. Given Mitsuyoshi’s popularity as a restaurant at which to celebrate special occasions, Dom Perignon champagne is likewise always in demand. Regulars know, however, to ask for the “hidden menu”, which is the restaurant’s secret selection of highly exclusive domestic sake.
Secreted away in an alleyway just three minutes’ walk from Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station, Sushi Mitsuyoshi leans into the idea of being a secret hideaway away from the rest of the world. Its interior is a masterclass in blending traditional Japanese design with modern architecture, with chic black walls and floor contrasting beautifully with its custom-made wooden chairs and light Japanese ginkgo counter.
An elegant 22-item combination of premium ingredients and impeccable skill. The counter-only omakase dinner course has the chef craft Edomae sushi out of a staggering variety of seafood, right before guests’ eyes. Whether it’s for a special occasion or just a treat to themselves and their loved ones, he invites diners to relax at the counter as they enjoy excellent sushi. ※ Please note that the exact content of the course menu is subject to change based on seasonal availability.
