Sake To Sakana DNA
Fugu / Crab / Other Seafood
The food at this traditional bar is a triumph of hyperlocal Kyoto dishes — the kind that goes well with sake from neighboring regional breweries.
Restaurant Details
Sake To Sakana DNA is a warm, golden space and about as true an example of a Kyoto-bound izakaya (traditional Japanese bar) as you’ll find on Takatsuji-dori. The name means “alcohol and fish,” with DNA reflecting the store’s Kyoto-bound culinary ethos.
A seat at the bar is the perfect vantage point to observe all that the owner has orchestrated. The store receives daily shipments of fresh fish every morning from Obama, Fukui Prefecture — the owner’s birthplace. The meal always starts with a bowl of soup to warm the belly. Kombu kelp and bonito dashi stock, staples of Kyoto cooking, provide a gentle prelude for dishes like charcoal-grilled fish and vegetable skewers. Regulars fall in love with the seafood tempura, which includes the fired horse mackerel, and assortments of sashimi. Other side snacks exude simple homespun charm: the rolled omelet, fried potato wedges and peppered fried rice.
Food is not the only winning ingredient. Diners also savor the sake, served in a small 90-milliliter glass and centered around classic and dry varieties from local breweries in Fushimi, Joho, and Obama areas. Half of the seating is dedicated to counter seating that overlooks the charcoal grill. Portions and prices are set for one. Bring a date after a satisfying dinner, or come here solo.
Sake to Sakana DNA is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant for 2024.
