Onigiri, the seaweed-wrapped rice balls loved by Japan, is roughly analogous to Western sandwiches, with a delicious core of flavored filling hidden among the rice. It’s one of those things that the country will probably never tire of.
So when Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku opened near the famous Sensoji Temple in 1954, it was here to stay. As one of the oldest onigiri specialist shops in Tokyo, the store has been serving up hungry pilgrims, gawking tourists and dedicated regulars for three generations.
The name of the restaurant, “yadoroku,” is a common phrase for someone who spends their days lazing around having fun and never working — a playful jab at the work ethic of the founder’s husband. Nowadays her grandson and daughter man the counter, in the afternoons and evenings respectively.
All of the rice balls are made fresh right in front of you, from ingredients arranged inside the glass counter display. Fillings are more traditional, such as salmon, ikura, pickled plums called ume and shrimp marinated in soy sauce. And while a lot has changed, the store insists on using local Edomae seaweed as a nod to its birthplace.
Despite the exceptional service and quality, dining here won’t break the bank. Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku is even featured in the Michelin Guide under the Bib Gourmand category — not bad for what started off as a small-time neighborhood onigiri shop.
