Minokichi Shinsaibashi Midosuji
The 300-year-old restaurant sets foot on the lively shopping strip of Shinsaibashi to bring true Kyoto cuisine to city-goers.
Restaurant Details
Kyoto’s most prestigious and oldest dining establishment has found its next home in the vibrant Shinsaibashi shopping district in Osaka, where it continues to celebrate traditional Kyoto-style kaiseki cuisine.
First established in 1716 near Kyoto's Sanjo Bridge, the main branch of Minokichi boasts a storied history and once enjoyed the patronage of Showa-era royalty. Despite its illustrious past, the restaurant remains dedicated to a simple mission: delivering the authentic taste of Kyoto.
Kyoto cuisine, or kyo-ryori, excels through its use of freshwater fish from Lake Biwa and the Kamo River, alongside locally sourced vegetables and pickles. Flavors are subtle and delicate, so the quality of ingredients is paramount. The menu features specialties like salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, Japanese black beef, and pot-cooked rice with seasonal pickles and vegetables — although dishes rotate to reflect the season. From its multiple course selection, freshwater fish always takes center stage.
The interior of the restaurant, featuring tatami floors and low tables, provides a tranquil setting for relaxing after your long travels in Osaka. For more intimate celebrations, opt for their private rooms, which accommodate up to 8 people. For larger gatherings, there is also a spacious room available that can host up to 30 guests.
