Kodaiji Wakuden
Gion tradition is on full display at this Edo-style tea house and kaiseki restaurant.
Restaurant Details
Gion is an area steeped in tradition. Noren curtains drape down over doorways, blowing in the breeze, as restaurateurs spread water on their front steps to purify them according to Shinto belief. History flows through every alley of this neighborhood.
One kaiseki eatery which goes to great lengths to honor this history is Kodaiji Wakuden. Established in 1952, this restaurant was designed in the imitation of a classic Edo-era tea house, exuding elegance. The interior design is specifically designed to clear and focus the mind, opening the way for an elegant and therapeutic dining experience
Taiza crab is the top speciality here, only available during winter. A great range of other dishes are available throughout the year, all prepared exquisitely. The chef’s charcoaling skills earn him the highest praise, with inventive grilled dishes such as skewers of mushroom wrapped in pike conger.
For Michelin star quality and classic Gion elegance, Kodaiji Wakuden is one of the best of its kind.
