Kagurazaka Yokota
Michelin-starred tempura restaurant Yokota sets up shop in Kagurazaka, where traditional Edomae sushi and tempura are served in kaiseki course menus.
Restaurant Details
While the original Yokota in Azabu-Juban made its name off of receiving a Michelin star for eight consecutive years for excellence in tempura, many familiar with Tokyo’s gourmet scene are also aware that Yokota has begun to diversify its menu offerings. Many of the restaurant’s offshoot branches specialize not just in tempura, but also in sushi — to great critical acclaim.
Tokyo’s upscale Kagurazaka neighborhood finds itself playing host to one of Yokota’s offshoot locations, each one proudly carrying on the same reputation for craftsmanship and dedication to excellence as the original restaurant. Using ingredients that are purchased from local markets every morning, the chefs at Yokota devise course menus that masterfully bring together traditional kaiseki dishes, Edomae-style nigiri, and of course, the tempura on which the restaurant built its reputation.
As is expected from Yokota, the tempura at the Kagurazaka branch is likewise immaculate, with the temperature, ratio of batter and blend of oils all carefully controlled, as well as the timing of which the tempura is fried. This results in the perfect bite, an impeccable balance between the crunch of the batter and the juicy interior within. But the sushi is no less perfect, with each one made in traditional Edomae style, using rice dressed with red vinegar, seaweed from the Ariake Sea and each fish prepared in its own ideal condition, be it fresh from the sea, or aged for maximum umami.
Kagurazaka is well-known for its high concentration of good eating establishments, and Yokota fits right in with them. A leisurely walk from Kagurazaka or Iidabashi Station, stepping into the restaurant instantly makes visitors feel like they are setting foot in a restaurant with Michelin pedigree, with a calm and sophisticated atmosphere.
Guests are invited to take a seat at the counter, with an unobstructed view of the chefs at work — and the impressive array of knives behind them — or choose a private room instead for an important business meeting, or other celebratory occasion.
