A delicious dialogue of traditional textures and flavors waits behind the unassuming grey walls of this tiny, Kabuki-themed izakaya in Ginza.

Restaurant Details

Located behind the Kabukiza Theater in Ginza, Kabukizaura Masashi doesn’t stand out much from the street and even embraces its hidden disposition — even the word "kabukiza-ura" translates to "behind the Kabuki theater." The interior tells a different story: a hand-painted mural above the counter depicts the world-spanning ties of people to food in the eye-catching style of traditional maps used in Kabuki shows.

The venue is operated by an owner-chef with a background in Chinese cooking and a sake-connoisseur proprietress. The menu itself is hand-written with careful black strokes that profess the level of personal care taken for each day for service. Omakase menus follow the traditional ebb and flow of textures and flavors, with special attention paid to the balance between each bite.

In addition to sashimi and nigiri, fried dishes, and expected Japanese sides that have been stewed or pickled, this izakaya-style venue also offers charcoal-grilled meat dishes. For drinks, rely on the expertise of the proprietress to choose a suitable bottle of sake for the season and patron. Despite its tight quarters, high-quality cooking and dedication have earned this spot a place in the Michelin Guide.
