Dining with a balmy view of the Katsura River and Togetsukyo Bridge, it’s hard to know what to savor first at Itsukichaya Arashiyama — the scenery or the food.
Restaurant Details
The journey to Itsukichaya Arashiyama isn’t short but worth it. A 30-minute train ride from central Kyoto brings you to the city’s western fringe. From Hankyu Station, cross the first of two bridges to reach this hidden gem, found on a small island cradled between two branches of the Katsura River.
Located near Arashiyama’s famed bamboo grove, Itsukichaya Arashiyama has its diners torn between two things: the stunning view it sits on and the food. Overlooking the gentle flow of the Katsura River and the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, counter seating is especially coveted on clear, blue-skied days, providing one of the best views of Kyoto’s natural beauty.
The menu is not to be overlooked, though, sometimes offering just a single set menu each season and featuring small bowls and side dishes inspired by Kyoto’s traditional banzai — a style of home-cooked dishes made with seasonal vegetables and simple ingredients.
The highlight is the golden egg donburi, a refined take on oyako-don (chicken and egg rice bowl) with a glossy egg yolk at the center. Seasonal additions include wagyu shoulder loin with autumn vegetables or hand-rolled sushi featuring seafood. A standout, goldeneye snapper, is cooked to plump perfection, accompanied by a wedge of sudachi for a touch of citrus; diners can transform it into “dashi chazuke” with a second pour of dashi for an extra layer of flavor.
Between the vibrant autumn foliage and the serene blue tones of winter, the magic of Itsukichaya Arashiyama is a constant throughout the year.
Reservations for the river-facing counter seats are highly recommended.
