Restaurant Details

The life of a Japanese fisherman is hard — waking up before the sun rises to battle frigid, raging seas, still bleary-eyed from sleep. There, upon the pitching and rolling deck, they struggle to bring nets of wriggling fish aboard the boat, muscles straining against the effort.

Fishing Restaurant ZAUO Meguro lets visitors enjoy just the fun parts of the fishing experience — no pre-dawn wakeup routine, no seasickness-inducing boat rides, just the pure thrill of catching their own fish.

Stepping through the doors, the first thing that strikes visitors is the seating area, designed to look like an old Japanese fishing boat. Diners lean over the side, miniature fishing rods in hand, trying to snag one of the dozens of fish swimming around in the long pool tanks running almost the length of the room.

As staff bring diners to their table, they will issue nets, rods and bait — and the rest is up to the guest. Visitors have the freedom to choose from a wide range of fish separated into various different tanks.

Once they've bagged the fish of their choice, guests hand it over to the staff and choose their desired cooking method , with the freedom to choose from grilling, tempura-frying, sashimi or sushi. A popular option is to go half-and-half, which allows guests to contrast, say, the crunch of tempura with the soft sweetness of sashimi. And in spite of the vast array of seasonal fish on offer, there's nothing sweeter than the fruits of one's own labors.
