Restaurant Details
A good time, with or without alcohol. This is the concept behind Asahi Breweries’ new venture, THE 5th by SUMADORI-BAR, which aims to introduce a new drinking experience to Shibuya partygoers.
The “SUMADORI-BAR” section of the name is derived from the term “smart drinking”, encompassing the establishment’s aim of letting adults interact and have a good time while still enjoying immaculately crafted drinks, with either low or no alcohol content.
“THE 5th,” meanwhile, refers to not just the bar’s location on the fifth floor, but also to its role as a “fifth place” outside of one’s home and workplace, in which the drinking and social experience can be enjoyed with all five senses.
The extensive menu — comprising over 20 different drinks — at THE 5th by SUMADORI-BAR is conceptualized and executed by a series of expert bartenders, with particular attention paid to the quality of ingredients used, and how they interact with each other to form complex, novel textures and aromas.
Each signature cocktail’s alcohol level can be freely customized, from between zero to 3 percent. Some of the signatures include the smoky Amber Embrace, which incorporates rooibos and guava leaf, as well as a choice of low-alcohol or non-alcoholic whiskey. The Drinkable Tiramisu, meanwhile, mixes dalgona coffee with cheese cream and coffee jelly for a sweet and sophisticated treat. For those seeking Japanese flavors in any season, there is the Zazen, a cold-brewed gyokuro green tea concoction.
To pair with the drinks, the bar has a series of largely Asian-inspired small plates, ranging from Hainanese chicken rice to a dim sum assortment, to even an array of vegan sweets.
Ascending to the bar’s fifth floor premises along Shibuya Center-Gai, literally less than a minute from Shibuya Station, visitors are immediately greeted by plush peacock-blue interiors, easy on the eyes and calming on the nerves. A large circular bar occupies the center of the space, facilitating easy, intimate conversations with the bartender and other patrons without ever feeling claustrophobic. With or without alcohol, THE 5th by SUMADORI-BAR is a welcoming space for drinkers and non-drinkers alike to have a good time.
