Bistro Yanagihara
The sultry bistro earned a Bib Gourmand in 2024 for its authentic Alsace recipes — a marriage of French and German cuisine.
Restaurant Details
Snugged between two quaint shops near the serene banks of Kyoto's Kamo River, Bistro Yanagihara serves hearty Alsace-style cuisine imbued with a home-cooking spirit. Owing to their geographic proximity, Alsacian recipes are rooted in French tradition, but still heavily influenced by Germanic robustness that gives its dishes a rustic feel.
Having trained in France’s Alsace region, the chef develops an a la carte that is predominantly carnivorous and faithful to Alsace. Charcuterie consisting of ham, terrine, pate and choucroute — sauerkraut served with meat — is a house specialty. Meanwhile, the delicate flavors of goose foie gras confit and elegantly plated smoked salmon pay homage to classic French culinary finesse. A perennial favorite is the beef cheek stewed in red wine, ladened with velvety sauce and accompanied by crisped potatoes.
Servings are generous and meant to be shared. In the evenings, mood turns sultry, glasses of wine flow freely and conversation bubble among friends. If the hints aren’t clear: come here for a nonchalant-but-not-quite date night.
