Named after a train station in Paris, Ebisu’s Abbesses presents the production of loyal French cooking in a swoon-worthy veneer of the classic bistro.

Restaurant Details

Abbesses is parked in a particularly blessed section in Ebisu, an area already covered with enough venerable eateries as it is.

Thankfully, with its smart delivery of French classics and a squadron of knowledgable waitstaff, the Michelin-selected bistro manages to keep its Gallic flag billowing in Tokyo. The ambiance is plucked straight out of a Parisian bistro, with diffused lighting, damask-patterned walls, dark wood paneling and red bench chairs that would turn any conversation moody.

The way to go is to entrust yourself with the crowd-pleasing menu of Abbesses-special marinated mackerel and roasted wagyu. The fish, swathed in vinaigrette, packs up all the flavors and textures lent from the daikon radish and heaps of thinly sliced shiso leaves. The kuroge wagyu roast relies on the shoulder and arm section of the cow, so the meat is low in fat but softened through slow cooking, further brightened by the restaurant’s signature French sauce. Meanwhile, the ravioli stuffed with scallops and tossed in espuma cream sauce is a pasta dish done right.

Other a la carte items, like the omelet folded with Comte cheese and topped with summer truffles or the lightly seared beef tartare, are perfect for sharing.

The dessert lineup of elderflower sorbet or a spiced creme brulee caps the night out. It’s certainly one of the city’s go-to spots for romantic dining that doesn’t scream “trying too hard” — effortless and stylish, just like the Parisians.
