Enjoy the refined elegance and tranquil atmosphere of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at a temple in Tokyo — tea and sweets included!
Tea ceremonies have been practiced in Japan for centuries and were considered a form of refined entertainment among Japan’s upper classes, especially samurai. Preparing and drinking tea requires special tools and etiquette that enhance the enjoyment of all who participate. Today, various schools and instructors pass down the teachings and art of this long-standing tradition for everyone to enjoy – and you’ll be learning from one of those masters yourself!
Your brief escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life will be at Koboji Temple in upscale Mita, Tokyo. Founded in 816 AD, Koboji Temple is home to the Hoto, a flame that has been burning for over 1200 years. After a warm introduction by the tea ceremony master, you’ll be given a brief explanation of the history of the tea ceremony. During the ceremony, your instructor will explain the significance of the tools being used and guide you through the thoughtful movements necessary for brewing the perfect pot of tea. With this immersive experience, you won’t just be drinking freshly brewed tea — you’ll also get to eat wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets that are an essential part of a tea ceremony.
