With a readily available fresh supply of fish like yellowfin tuna, Japanese eel and oceanic bonito offered every morning at the bustling Kagoshima Fish Market, it is no surprise that the city is a paradise for lovers of seafood and sushi. Committed enthusiasts can even enjoy sushi for breakfast and learn a few sushi-making skills while they are at it at this unique lesson in a sushi restaurant in central Kagoshima.
Ikehata is a modern Edomae-style sushi restaurant run by a chef who trained in Tokyo. Beloved by locals who always expect the freshest of the fresh, this restaurant is known for its exclusivity, being difficult to book due to its popularity and only open for dinner. In this experience, however, they exceptionally open their doors early in the morning (typically at 7:50, although the starting time is negotiable) for you to learn the basics of sushi-making and enjoy an unforgettable sushi breakfast.
The chef will start by giving you an introduction to sushi-making before teaching you how to make sushi rolls. Guided by their instructions, you’ll prepare two rolls filled with cucumber and tuna. After your sushi is done, you’ll enjoy an omakase course, where the chef will display his mesmerizing sushi-making skill in making a breakfast set comprising four pieces of fresh seasonal sushi and a comforting bowl of soup. After enjoying the fruits of the sea, you will receive a sushi-making mat as a souvenir before you bid farewell to your instructor with newly-acquired sushi knowledge and a full stomach.
