Experience Details

Tuck into Osaka's most beloved street food — grilled octopus dumplings (takoyaki) — right in the heart of Kyoto! In this private cooking class led by local foodie Midori, you'll discover the tantalizing flavors of Western Japan as you learn to make a takoyaki meal complete with a vegetable side dish, soup, and onigiri rice balls. During the lesson, you'll taste Japanese seasonings, like dashi, as you hear insights, tips, and tricks from your local host.

Midori customizes each class so you can feel reassured you can taste local flavors without compromising your dietary restrictions. For example, eggs are replaced with Japanese yam to make vegan takoyaki, and atsuage (deep-fried tofu) is used instead of octopus. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free options are available! Upon booking, please let your host know if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies.

Even better, Midori's Kyoto Kitchen is located only 10 minutes from Kyoto Station by train, ensuring easy access to and from most attractions in the city.

Midori is a friendly guide and Kyoto foodie who has taught Japanese cooking to international travelers for over eight years. She has lived abroad in Singapore and has over 30 years of culinary research experience specializing in Southeast Asian cuisine. She provides tailored cooking classes adapted to your needs and is eager to share her extensive knowledge of Kyoto's culinary scene and her experience as a local culinary researcher. Get ready to soak in all her insights about the city — we recommend booking this experience for the beginning of your trip so you can ask her for advice to make your visit even more memorable!
