Experience Details
Japanese packed meals, known as bento, come in multiple shapes and forms, but few are as fun as the one you make yourself. In this experience in Yokohama, learn to assemble a balanced, appetizing Japanese bento meal and enjoy it while picnicking in the park with your host, Miho.
Miho will guide you in making three onigiri rice balls, a true bento staple. From making the pillowy rice to arranging the fillings and shaping them to packing them into a traditional bento box, learn how locals enjoy this simple yet comforting treat. Then, you'll prepare miso soup to enjoy during your picnic together.
If you follow a vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free diet, you can still create and enjoy your own miso soup by using kombu and shiitake mushrooms instead of the usual bonito-based dashi that's commonly used in Japanese cooking. Just let your host know your dietary restrictions or food preferences upon booking.
After your cooking session, you'll head to Utsukushigaoka Park with Miho to enjoy a picnic with your freshly made meal. If it's raining, Miho will take you to explore other local spots, such as nearby department stores or supermarkets, where you can experience everyday life in Yokohama.
See Yokohama as a local, beyond the tourist sites, and learn about Japanese food and culture from a friendly host in an intimate setting. At the end of your experience, Miho can help guide you to the nearest station or bus stop. This experience can be customized by making inarizushi instead of onigiri, or forgoing the picnic for just the cooking class session (see Options).
