Experience Details
Bento are Japanese packed meals known for their appetizing quality and beautiful presentation. But what do these boxes contain typically, and how difficult is it to make them yourself? Find out during this bento-making workshop in Fukuoka, followed by a picnic in a nearby park for you to enjoy your homemade meal.
You’ll step inside a local’s home to make a quintessential bento box to pack for your picnic. You’ll be preparing staples that are typically found in bento, like onigiri (seasoned rice balls), karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken), rolled omelet (tamagoyaki) and a small spinach salad. You can customize two onigiri with your favorite ingredients: pickled plum, cod roe, salmon flakes, nori tsukudani and tuna mayonnaise. Your host will also teach you how to use a “makisu” bamboo mat, a utensil commonly used in kitchens across Japan.
Once your meal is ready, you’ll assemble your bento and wrap it in a tenugui, a decorative towel you can take home as a souvenir. You’ll then take your bento to a neighborhood park to picnic with your host. Feel free to ask your host any questions you may have about Japanese culture or advice on traveling through Fukuoka.
