Experience Details
Once the sun sets, the paper lanterns of Gion, perhaps Kyoto’s most emblematic district, come aglow. Gion is famous for its tearooms and quaint machiya houses, but with so much to see, it can be challenging to navigate alone. In this three-hour evening tour, a guide will take you to explore the quintessential Gion streets and shrines and enjoy a customized meal at a cozy restaurant. Expect an unforgettable evening where you will discover why the old capital retains its strong allure to this day.
Firstly, your guide will take you to the heart of Gion, where it feels like time has stopped. You'll visit the Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine, the Shirakawa-dori road with machiya and traditional houses, the quaint Tatsumi bridge, famous for its beautiful cherry blossom trees, and the Yasaka shrine. After walking for about an hour, you'll unwind together at a traditional restaurant where an unforgettable culinary experience awaits.
Kappo cuisine typically consists of a scrumptious meal with several courses, but the menu itself is flexible. The chef will consider your preferences and dietary restrictions to prepare a dinner especially for you. The main difference with other similar dining experiences in Japan is that in kappo restaurants guests sit near the chef, which facilitates conversation and makes the experience much more personal and fun. As evening turns to night and you indulge in several beautifully presented dishes with some of the best Kyoto cuisine, the tour will come to an end at about 8pm, after which you are free to continue exploring the beauty of Gion by moonlight!
