This is a rare opportunity to be part of a timeless Japanese celebration, offering a chance to witness the captivating beauty of Arashiyama during a unique festival. Tsukimi dates back a thousand years to Japan’s Heian period. Originally a harvest festival to express gratitude for abundant crops, it evolved into an occasion for poetic contemplation and an appreciation of nature's beauty.
The destination: Arashiyama is a captivating western Kyoto district celebrated for its natural beauty and cultural significance. Locals and visitors alike have long cherished this scenic area for its lush bamboo forest, historical landmarks, and traditional charm.
The festivities: Alongside an expert guide dressed in traditional garments, you’ll board a yakatabune–a Japanese ‘pleasure boat’ with a rich history dating back to the Heian period. Once favored by aristocrats for their luxurious design and comfort, today they allow visitors to experience the refined lifestyle of a bygone era. On board, you’ll witness traditional Japanese performing arts and shinobue (Japanese flute) performances by esteemed artists, Awa (29 September) and Kazuya Sato (30 September & 1 October).
The food: You’ll feast on a luxurious autumnal kaiseki course by Arashiyama Kumahiko–a celebrated restaurant serving high-quality, Japanese cuisine. Celebrated chefs will entertain you with a ‘dinner performance’ aboard the boat before serving you an elegant meal including wagyu beef, fresh seafood (including abalone), and seasonal vegetable dishes.
