Not a bistro, not a teppan joint, but somewhere in between — Uzaki Hirotaka’s teppanyaki brings a distinctive French edge to Osaka’s dining scene.

Restaurant Details

In what owner-chef Uzaki Hirotaka bills a “teppan bistro,” classic French cooking techniques fuse with an urban approach for an old-world-meets-new-world spin on teppanyaki.

Uzaki's initial encounter with French cuisine was sparked by a television program, inspiring him to train in Paris and subsequently work in French restaurants in Osaka before establishing Oribe. Located in Osaka’s pedestrian-friendly Yotsubashi district, the restaurant gradually drew the crowd with its showmanship flair and Uzaki’s adeptness in teppan cooking that churns out some of the city’s most exciting street food-inspired grubs.

These days, even first-time diners know to order the “cabbage steak,” which is perfectly seared on the surface with heavenly gorgonzola cheese and white dashi sauce poured on top. Traditional Osaka dishes like the okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake) and yakisoba become nearly impossible to leave anyone dissatisfied. Meanwhile, the abalone steak served with liver risotto and grilled lobster is a surefire bet.

Occasionally, service is helmed by Uzaki’s enthusiastic mother. It’s a two-in-one package of dinner and a show.
