For those willing to travel outside of the major tourist cities, Japan has a plethora of gourmet pilgrimage spots that reward travelers with some of the best food on the planet. One such place is Sakai City, in Fukui Prefecture, where this incredible crab restaurant is located.


If you think you’ve had great crab before, think again. Kawaki takes it to another level. They only serve boiled crabs, which they begin cooking two hours prior to your arrival to ensure prime temperature and texture. Expect to wait around thirty minutes or so after sitting down while they finish the final preparations.


The Echizen crab which they serve is native to this particular part of Japan’s north coast, as the waters have the optimal temperature and conditions for them to thrive. The species was dedicated to the imperial family in 1909 on account of its famously delicious flavor. Nowadays, many members of Japan’s high society travel to Kawaki to sample this delicacy at the source.
