HIROKI Shimokitazawa has been a favorite of the in-the-know crowd of Shimokitazawa for 35 years. The residents of Tokyo’s hippest neighborhood know their food, so it’s best to trust their instincts on this awesome okonomiyaki store.
They specialize in the Hiroshima style of okonomiyaki, which typically uses noodles as one of the layers, making for an ultra-filling package. If you’re in the mood to absolutely stuff yourself, opt for the cheese-topped okonomiyaki (just give yourself ample time to sit and regain your composure afterwards — say about 15 to 20 hours). Seafood-only varieties are also available.
HIROKI even goes to the extent of sourcing ingredients straight from Hiroshima to make their savory pancakes as authentic as possible. Counter seats let you see the whole assembly process: the chef layering up each ingredient into a fully loaded pile of goodness.
If you still have any room left for another bite, add on some authentic Hiroshima-style sides too. However, be warned: even though okonomiyaki can sometimes look small, the density and height means that they can usually present a challenge even for big eaters.
