Experience mouthwatering gyoza in Kyoto’s Gion district, a traditional and old-fashioned geisha area. Gyoza Hohei is a restaurant that specializes in — of course — gyoza, and they have two main menu items.
The first is their standard “gyoza” dumplings with garlic and chives: eight small gyoza dumplings with crunchy, thin skin and plenty of vegetables per serving. You can enjoy them with soy sauce and vinegar, and add chili, too. Another is “ginger gyoza” which goes well with their special miso sauce. It is popular among women and geisha because it doesn’t contain garlic.
Besides gyoza, the menu also includes small dishes such as potato salad or pickled cucumber which is ideal in combination with alcohol. Unique to Gyoza Hohei is their “shijimi espresso,” a concentrated clam soup with a cloudy broth that supposedly helps your liver recuperate from a night of drinking.
Gyoza Hohei opened in 2011 in Kyoto and was awarded the Bib Gourmand award from the Michelin Guide in 2017 and 2018. It opens in the evening, so it is a suitable second stop on a night of bar hopping. This restaurant is quite popular, so you should make sure to place your reservation early!
