Michelin Bib Gourmand-level Basque cuisine in the heart of Osaka’s Honmachi district.

Restaurant Details

Basque cuisine is hearty, flavorful and decidedly rustic. Everything about the northern Spanish country seems to be in direct opposition to Osaka’s urban, cosmopolitan district of Honmachi, all glass and steel office buildings.

But a single bite of the pintxos at Gastroteka Bimendi is enough to transport one to the cobblestoned alleys of Hondarribia or the brilliant white sand of Donostia-San Sebastian’s beaches. Pickled sardines and Iberico pork straight from Spain are to be expected, as is a comprehensive selection of wines, and the ubiquitous cloudy Basque apple cider, delightfully tart.

Dinner brings satisfying Basque favorites like duck rice and beef cheek stewed in red wine, the latter so tender it melts in the mouth. Yet this gastronomic trip to the Basque country won’t break the bank; having won the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2021, this gastroteka has been recognized by Michelin inspectors for its excellent value for money.

A 5-minute walk from Yotsubashi Station and a stone’s throw from Utsubo Park, Gastroteka Bimendi finds itself a popular night spot with young people, particularly for groups of women on a girls’ night out. The open-air terrace seats are popular choices in spring, when it’s just starting to warm up; in the colder months, small tables and intimate counter seating faithfully replicate the atmosphere of Hondarribia’s best bars.
