A weekly rotation of cut flowers makes this taste of the Spanish old country feel eternally fresh and blooming with flavor.

Restaurant Details

By day, it’s the popular florist Juuri. But at night, this Kamata flower shop turns into one of south Tokyo’s most beloved Spanish restaurants, Flowers & Spanish Sonrisa. The recipient of a Michelin Bib Gourmand, this homey, rustic venue perfumes the neighborhood with the authentic colors and scents of Spain.

Part showroom, part dining experience, Sonrisa invites guests to experience the coasts and foothills of Spain without ever leaving Tokyo. Rich Basque cheesecakes made the old-fashioned way have gained enough of a following to be shipped around the country.

First-time guests are recommended to try the authentic paella, made with the chef’s secret dashi and traditional techniques. Wide, shallow pans are filled to the brim with particularly selected surume-ika (Pacific flying squid), shrimp, and brilliant golden Spanish rice, caramelized and crispy on the bottom.

The fragrance that wafts from these family-size dishes rivals the lovely perfume from the shop’s signature floral decor, which is artfully arranged on the walls, countertops and even ceiling. It’s the perfect environment in which to enjoy Sonrisa’s all-natural and Spanish wine selection — which, like its floral catalog, is extensive.
