Doozono
Experiment with whale cuisine and a host of other seafood delicacies at this Osaka specialist.
Restaurant Details
Said to be a nostalgic taste for the seniors of Japan, and an unfamiliar one for the youth, Doozono carries the torch for a historical (and sometimes controversial) ingredient: whale.
The whale dishes at Doozono are made from the highest quality beaked whales. While the specialty dishes here are the whale dishes, that's not all the restaurant has to offer. Sashimi, grilled fish, boiled fish, and various vegetable dishes are also served. There is also a seasonal hotpot, the Hari Shabu Nabe, that includes suppon, fugu, hamo, and kanburi. The hotpot is possibly the hottest item on the menu after the whale dishes.
The success of these whale dishes didn't come automatically. The owner of Doozono had to go through countless rounds of trial and error to get the perfect recipe and combination of ingredients. Benefitting from his tireless efforts, the restaurant has a great range of small dishes which go excellently with this unique meat.
