Italian dining is shaped into the structures of traditional Kyoto dining, with excellent results, at this Gion kappo-Italiano.

Restaurant Details

Among the sea of kappo and kaiseki eateries which populate Kyoto’s Gion district, this formerly Michelin-starred Italian restaurant is an unusual, but very welcome, addition. Although the food is Italian, the service is Kyoto-style, with a set-course omakase menu featuring a series of small plates served over several hours. The classical myth referenced in the title addresses this fusion of styles: an elegant chimera of Italian ingredients, Japanese ingredients, and Kyoto ambiance.

Their signature dish is the roast duck, with a special focus on the provenance of the meat, and even the feed which it was raised on. High-quality lobster, sashimi, and homemade bread also feature. A classic taste of Italy, refracted through the prism of the local culture — Chimera is sure to please lovers of both culinary traditions.
