Experience Details
Among the most striking images of Wakayama and Japan in general is that of the vermilion three-story pagoda of Seigantoji Temple against the thundering backdrop of Nachi waterfall. But this landmark does more than paint a pretty picture; it’s also a significant relic with major spiritual and historical significance. For one, it's among few places in the country where a temple and a shrine sit next to each other, and the area is dotted with sites of interest, from centuries-old worship buildings and structures to natural wonders that feel otherworldly in their magnificence.
This unique experience allows you to explore the spiritual depths of this location, engage in its traditions, and get an exclusive glimpse into its ancient practices. After meeting your host at JR Kii-Katsura Station, you’ll arrive at the temple grounds where you’ll dress in traditional attire in the style used roughly a thousand years ago during the Heian period. You’ll then stroll with your guide to Meoto Sugi (literally, the “husband and wife cedars”). These two towering trees stand nearly 40 meters in height and are one of the natural marvels onsite.
Next, you’ll be granted the exclusive chance to enter the Takijoan tearoom, which was recently opened to the public after being used privately for decades. Here, you’ll experience a traditional tea ceremony and visit Sonsho-in, where you’ll enjoy a premium lunch. After your meal, you’ll return to JR Kii-Katsura Station to continue exploring Wakayama at your own pace.
