Step into a 100-year-old townhouse (machiya) in Kyoto’s Ninenzaka, with winding sidestreets and traditional buildings reminiscent of times past. Only a few minutes away from the famous Kiyomizudera Temple, a tea instructor will connect you with some of Japan’s more ancient traditions and teach you how to make and enjoy matcha the traditional way.
Experience flow:

Arrive at the venue, where your hosts will introduce the history and cultural background of the tea ceremony. Understand the tools used during this practice, such as the tea bowl (chawan), whisk (chasen) and scoop (chashaku) and how to care for them.
-Learn tea etiquette
Learn the proper handling of the tea bowl and etiquette for receiving tea during the ceremony, as well as insights on the rules and their importance.
-Tea ceremony demonstration
Experience a tea ceremony demonstration by the tea instructor.
-Learn to whisk matcha
Next, you will prepare your own matcha the traditional way guided by your instructor.

There will be time for questions from you and other participants, allowing for reflection and a deeper understanding of the tea ceremony.

The experience venue is located near Starbucks Coffee Kyoto, Ninenzaka Yasaka Chaya branch, around 7 minutes on foot from Kiyomizudera Temple. More details and a Google Maps link will be shared upon booking.
Remarks
You are free to take pictures during the lesson but please refrain from taking videos of the instructor's demonstration.
Please wear socks or bring your own. If you arrive barefoot, you will be requested to purchase socks for an additional fee.
You cannot join the class if you are more than 15 minutes late.
