Experience Details

Learn how to make taiyaki, a beloved wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet) that is thought to have originated in Tokyo. This cute, fish-shaped treat is often compared to a waffle, and it is stuffed with all manner of sweet fillings from cream to the traditional anko (red bean paste). This experience will also allow you to experiment with other fun and funky flavors, like cheese, spicy keema curry, and even okonomiyaki! The unassuming exterior can conceal all sorts of creative flavors and mix-ins, making it perfect for a game of Russian roulette. So, feel free to bring your own crazy additions like wasabi or karashi (spicy mustard) to up the ante.

First, you'll watch an instructional video to prepare you for the taiyaki making lesson. Then, you'll get started on the dough, making it from scratch. After heating up the special taiyaki hot plate, which turns out perfectly fish-shaped taiyaki every time, you’ll use traditional Japanese tools like “chakkiri” to pour the batter and “ansashi” to portion the fillings. After your three taiyaki have cooked, you can create a delicious taiyaki tower.

Located in Asakusa, an area of Tokyo known for historic temples and shrines and its old-school feel, the store is furnished to suit the neighborhood. It is decorated in a traditional Japanese style, making it an Instagrammable spot to take commemorative photos or videos. With its sliding paper doors and traditional floor seating, immerse in the in the store's Asakusa-style atmosphere.

Experience Location

Home to the famous Sensoji Temple, a Buddhist temple built in the 7th century, Asakusa overflows with rich history and traditional culture. In the past, Asakusa was Tokyo’s leading entertainment district, a red light district with a number of kabuki theaters. Most of Asakusa was destroyed during World War II, but it has since grown into one of Tokyo's most visited tourist spots. Here, you'll find Nakamise Dori, a bustling shopping street lined with local snack and souvenir shops. Asakusa also has other attractions such as parks, public baths, and museums.
