Enjoy viewing the spring sakura blossoms in the serene grounds of Shiogama Shrine, a temple that’s over 1200 years old! It features its own rare double-flowering variety of cherry blossom trees called Shiogama-zakura, also considered a national Natural Monument.

A grand Shinto shrine, Shiogama Jinja Shrine is located on a hill in the heart of Shiogama City on the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. It’s a large shrine complex for the protection of fisherman and children, believed to be over 1200 years old. A total of 15 buildings of Shiogama Shrine have been designated as important cultural treasures, with many festivals held here throughout the year. Notably, the grounds host over 300 cherry blossom trees, including a local variety called Shiogama Cherry, making Shiogama Shrine one of the city’s best cherry blossom viewing spots in spring.
