Experience Details
In this hands-on sweets-making workshop, learn how to make two of Kyoto’s most beloved wagashi (traditional confectioneries): mitarashi dango and matcha shiratama.
Mitarashi dango are skewered rice dumplings (dango) coated in a glossy and rich soy sauce glaze with a sweet and savory flavor. These round rice dumplings are said to have been inspired by the Shimigamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Kyoto — more specifically, by the water bubbles of the Mitarashi Pond, where purification rituals were performed.
Matcha shiratama are soft and chewy dumplings flavored with matcha and served with kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) and kinako powder (roasted soybean flour) for extra flavor. These soft treats are said to have been inspired by Chinese dumplings that became popular in Japan centuries ago, particularly as summer treats.
Through this 1-hour hands-on workshop, you’ll learn to make both of these sweets to understand Kyoto’s unique food culture further, discover new ingredients you might not have known before, and take home original, easy-to-follow recipes to satisfy your next craving for traditional Japanese confectioneries.
