Experience Details
Takayama – also known as Hida Takayama – is a traditional city in Gifu Prefecture that seems suspended in time. Its quaint cobblestone streets lined with traditional buildings set the perfect scene to explore the rich heritage of Japanese cuisine with a cooking class hosted by a passionate local cook.
In this cooking class, you'll learn to make some of Japan's classic foods and enjoy them with your host. Your first item on the menu will be onigiri rice balls. With fillings, salt, cooked rice, and seaweed, you'll easily shape this popular bite into its classic triangular shape. Next, you'll prepare Japan’s take on the omelet, tamagoyaki. Your host will guide you on pouring the egg mixture into a square frying pan, then roll it up and enjoy!
But the star of the class are takoyaki, Osaka's grilled octopus dumplings. This comforting street food exploded in popularity post-war and is now a crowd favorite. You’ll feel like a real chef using a special takoyaki maker with half-moon molds to shape your dumplings into perfectly sumptuous balls.
Finally, it’ll be time to enjoy another aspect of Japanese culture: a tea ceremony. Traditional tea ceremonies are formal and structured, but your host will present a simplified version at the table that’s easy to replicate at home and retains the essence of the original. After a warm cup of tea, enjoy the fruits of your labor as you enjoy your delicious assortment of Japanese staple foods prepared by yourself.
