The thought of Japan perhaps brings to mind neon lights, robots and high-speed trains. But a slower, more organic side of the country can also be explored — what is known as “satoyama,” the traditional lifestyle in the Japanese countryside. Get a taste of satoyama in a mountain village in Shizuoka, where locals will welcome you into their traditional home to spend a day together fishing, chopping firewood, and enjoying a homemade meal around a sunken hearth. Learn about the local culture, traditions and recipes, soak in the pristine views of Mt. Fuji from their backyard, and discover a completely different way of living away from crowds and close to nature.
Experience flow:
-Meet your host at JR Fujiueda Station, where they will pick you up and take you to their home by car (~30 min)
-Arrive at the traditional house and chop firewood to use for preparing food
-Next, it’s fishing time! Catch fresh fish with guidance from your host
-Make a fire in a traditional hearth and cook a meal with fresh, seasonal ingredients, following local recipes
-Grill Yamame trout and vegetables on the hearth and enjoy them with freshly cooked rice
-After the experience, your hosts will drop you off at JR Fujiueda Station
