Experience Details
Journey into the countryside of Tochigi and experience what life is like in rural Japan for a night! Staying in a beautifully restored, traditional kominka (Japanese folk house) home, immerse yourself in life outside of Japan’s big cities. The kominka house has updated modern amenities to make your stay comfortable, but the bones of the traditional design remain. This comfortable and charming open-plan home features traditional tatami bamboo flooring and makes for the perfect base to be able to explore the rest of the local area.
To welcome you to your stay in the kominka, you will pay a visit to a local farm. By meeting local farmers, you can gain an understanding of daily life in the Japanese countryside. Helping to harvest seasonal fruit and vegetables, you can learn about local produce and the local environment. Try your hand at harvesting Japanese daikon radish, ume (Japanese plums), or even kiwi fruit (that’s right, you can grow kiwis in Japan!) Soak up the peaceful atmosphere as you take a stroll along the river, visiting the orchards and fields. You’ll definitely feel refreshed and connected with the earth after a day of hands-on work in the field.
After you’ve spent some time on the farm, you’ll enjoy a delicious homemade lunch. Prepared using local ingredients, you can taste some of the farm’s mouthwatering produce such as beans, daikon radish, and seasonal fruits. Rich in flavor and nutrients, you can enjoy your healthy lunch with a side of conversation with your warm and welcoming hosts. Enjoy sharing stories over this unique farm stay meal and create a connection with rural Japanese life.
