Experience Details

Wholesome and delicious, bento boxes are the typical Japanese meal that’s made to-go. Bento in Japan are made of different small portions of foods that are packed into separate compartments of a convenient lunch box. Bento boxes make a great lunch to take to school or to work when made at home (filled with your favorite bits and pieces), though they can also be easily grabbed from a convenience store, specialty shop, or department store counter. Perfect for picnics or day trips, bento boxes are widely eaten in Japanese culture, with the added benefits that bento tend to be healthy, and are delicious even when served cold!


Learn how to make your very own bento box lunch during this Bento Making Class in Kyoto, where you’ll be able to try your hand at a number of cooking styles throughout the lesson. During the bento making process, you’ll learn how to make 6 different popular Japanese dishes, including a Japanese salad (with an addictive sesame dressing), teriyaki chicken, a rolled egg omelet, deep-fried tempura pieces, a delicious roll of sushi, and miso soup (with vegetarian options upon request). Throughout each step, you’ll learn about how locals in Kyoto like to cook with basic Japanese seasonings and stocks such as dashi. With the help of your friendly English-speaking instructor, you’ll gain new skills making a variety of Japanese foods during this bento making class. Plus, after you’ve finished cooking, you’ll be able to eat your beautiful creations in a bento boxed lunch bonanza!

  • The cooking studio is located in Downtown Kyoto. The exact location and a guide for accessing the cooking class location will be provided upon booking.

  • For vegetarian customers, fish can be replaced with vegetables and other ingredients.

  • Other dietary requirements can be accommodated for, please let us know.

  • Halal guests: We don't use Halal meat; however, we can remove the alcohol components/ingredients.

  • Children under 5 are free of charge.

The bustling Downtown area of Kyoto is the heart of the city, loaded with hotels, artisanal shopfronts, specialty restaurants, and hidden bars. With pleasant surprises around every corner and alleyway, before the Kamo-gawa River to the east lies the beautiful old town architecture of Pontocho, nestled in alongside the local izakaya and lively club scene. The enormous Teramachi and Shinkyogoku shopping arcades run north to south, intersected by the famous Nishiki Markets (“Kyoto’s Kitchen”), while delicious department store basements bubble below with tasty regional samples.
