Getting to and around Shibuya, Tokyo

Shibuya Station is easy to access from anywhere in Tokyo. In fact, it’s harder to get out of the station than it is to get there. A number of lines run through Shibuya Station:

  • JR East lines: Saikyo Line, Shonan–Shinjuku Line, Yamanote Line

  • Private lines: Keio Inokashira Line, Den-en-toshi Line, Toyoko Line

  • Metro lines: Ginza Line, Hanzomon Line, Toyoko Line

Once you’ve arrived in Shibuya, everything will likely be walkable or a stop or two on the Metro.

1-day Shibuya itinerary

9 am: Say hi to Hachiko and cross Shibuya’s Scramble Crossing

The iconic Hachiko statue in Shibuya.

Tick off two of Shibuya’s must-see landmarks within minutes of arriving in Shibuya! First, make sure you come out of Shibuya Station via the Hachiko Exit. You’ll come out in the center of Shibuya, welcomed by the most loyal pup in Tokyo.

From there, you have to cross the world-famous Shibuya Crossing at least once. Plus, at this time, it’s sure to be at its most impactful — Tokyo’s workforce will be making their way to offices for the day, making for great travel footage.

9:30 am: Breakfast in Shibuya: IVY PLACE

Open from 8 am, IVY PLACE is one of the fanciest breakfast places in Shibuya, only a 15-minute walk from Shibuya Station.

Even in the heart of the city, it offers a relaxing space to start your day, boasting lush green surroundings and a cafe, dining and bar area within. Whether you’re in the mood for something small, like a bowl of fruit-topped granola or a fruit smoothie, or are tempted by the brunch-esque delights of pancakes and egg dishes, there’s something for everyone.

11 am: Go shopping at Shibuya Parco

The Nintendo Store at Shibuya Parco, filled with people.

Once you’ve had your fill of breakfast and are ready for a spot of shopping, head straight to Shibuya Parco, a 25-minute walk through the city that ends with a wide selection of shops and fashion boutiques.

Some of the most memorable for gamers and anime lovers are the Capcom Store, Nintendo Store, JUMP! Store and the Pokemon Center, all on the same floor. You can also enjoy amazing views of the Shibuya skyline from the rooftop observation deck.

Take a breather here at the rooftop bar, where you can enjoy cocktails, beers, soft drinks and snacks.

1-3 pm: Sushi-making class and omakase lunch at Sushi Hajime

Sushi in Shibuya? That’s a vibe. Learning how to make sushi before enjoying an omakase sushi lunch? That’s a core memory.

In this sushi masterclass, you’ll join a master sushi chef — and one who is undeniably handsome, if we’re being honest — who will teach you how to make the classic nigiri type of sushi.

Lay fresh seafood on top of vinegared rice and grind fresh wasabi before enjoying a lunch of handmade sushi, served alongside dessert, sake and fine Japanese tea.

4 pm: Explore Harajuku for street food with Shizuka Anderson

Ever watched one of byFood’s YouTube videos? Then you may already know of byFood host Shizuka Anderson, beloved for her bubbly personality and love of Japanese cuisine. Now’s your chance to meet her!

Let Shizuka take you through Harajuku’s famous Takeshita Street, where you can try some of the best sweet and savory street foods in Tokyo. You’ll hop between street food vendors while she tells you more about the area and the different foods you’re trying, and then you’ll stop in a colorful okonomiyaki restaurant for Japan’s famous savory pancakes, all-you-can-drink options and lively chats.

You’ll also get a chance to take a few cute pictures and pick up souvenirs!

7-11 pm: Drinks in Shibuya

A group of people enjoying a bar-hopping tour in Shibuya.

Brush shoulders with the locals at Shibuya’s best bars and clubs and become one with Tokyo’s electric nightlife scene. You’ll visit a few different spots for delicious food — paired with a free shot at each venue — making conversation with other travelers and locals who happen to be creating their own perfect night.

Get ready to go clubbing, because you’ll have free entry into one of Shibuya’s nightclubs.

Then, it’s up to you! Will you be catching the last train back to your hotel or keeping the dancing going until the sun comes up?

If the club happens to close before you’re ready to call it a night, swap over to karaoke in Tokyo, many of which are open 24/7.

If you’re heading over to Shinjuku instead, browse the best Shinjuku nightlife spots.

While you’re spending the day in Shibuya, check out all the best street food, the best bars, see if there are any Tokyo food tours you want to join, or see if our 3-day Tokyo itinerary has anything extra things you’d like to do in Tokyo!
