Megijima Travel Guide

Megijima
Face your inner demons and visit Megijima, the setting for the famous Momotaro legend, where a little boy who is born from a peach faces the monsters of the island.

Megijima is small, but it is filled with tons of activities to do, making it the perfect day trip. The island is only a short 20-minute ferry ride from Takamatsu, Kagawa’s lively port city. Part of the legend Momotaro takes place on Megijima, also known as Onigashima (Ogre Island) in the story. The boy from the story fights the ogres that reside on this island and the peak of Megijima houses a cave that legend says is the ogres’ fortress. Visitors who visit the cave can expect to see statues of ogres from the Momotaro story.

Get a beautiful 360-degree view on top of the island at the mountaintop park. Visitors who come during the spring have an opportunity to see the bright pink cherry blossoms surrounding the park. Climb down the mountain during lunchtime and enjoy a meal at one of the beachside restaurants. You can also bring your own picnic items and sit on the sand and enjoy the clear blue waters. Biking along the beach is also a popular activity and a quick way to move around the island.
