Restaurant Details
As one of Tokyo’s most hotly contested sushi “battlegrounds”, Ginza has no shortage of high-end omakase sushi restaurants. For a sushi restaurant to remain in business in Ginza, it’s not enough to have just the freshest ingredients or the most refined sushi technique; this is the barest minimum for a sushi restaurant in the district.
As one of the mainstay sushi restaurants in Ginza, it’s no doubt that the Higashi-Ginza branch of the venerable Sushi Yamaken is in possession of all of the above. At its counter, highly experienced chefs give guests what is known as the “sushi kappo” experience, creating not just nigiri and other types of sushi, but also in traditional kappo style, a series of small dishes using fresh seasonal ingredients. The tuna and sea urchin are particularly well-regarded; it comes as no surprise that the restaurant is especially difficult to reserve in winter, when both of them are at their sweetest.
But Yamaken also has two other secret weapons in its arsenal; the first is its location, which is a mere 1-minute walk from Higashi-ginza Station. An omakase sushi meal at its counter is the ideal way in which to wrap up a day of sightseeing in one of Tokyo’s most upscale shopping and dining districts, without having to navigate the twisted maze that is the Yurakucho backstreets.
The other main draw is, also, its location. Its position on the ninth floor means that guests have a beautiful view of the Ginza skyline and all of its multicolored lights, making it the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion (dessert plates with customised messages can be made too, if the staff are notified ahead of time). Take a seat at the counter to a hearty greeting from the chef, and sink into the stylish and modern atmosphere. A single bite of the saki-zuke appetizer will immediately wash away the fatigue of the day.
