Nangoku Fruits Parlor
The darling parlor in Tenjin is all about fruits — luscious varieties stacked in parfaits, topped on summer-special kakigori and crowned on French toast.
Restaurant Details
Positioned among a cluster of corporate buildings and boutique shops in Tenjin, this photogenic fruit parlor is run by Nangoku Fruits, a long-established fruits and vegetable company that began in 1932 in Fukuoka, and has since expanded to eight locations across the city. Today, the sun-drenched venue has all the trimmings of a dessert-focused cafe but the impressive backing of a 90-year-old wholesaler.
It stacks its open cabinet with ripe, seasonal fruits from local farmers and international producers and operates on the credo of, “making fruits even more delicious” and “bringing smiles to diners with fruits.” The store even has dedicated fruit connoisseurs to handpick the finest varieties from around the world and meticulously assess ripeness to serve each fruit at its peak perfection.
The fruit parlor prompt may have been overused nowadays, but many things about Nangoku Fruits Parlor are surprising. Its voluminous fruit parfaits — a dessert unique to Japan — and perfectly cross-sectioned fruit sandwich are a thing of beauty, and the hand-squeezed musk melon juice served in a slim wine glass feels almost refined. The kakigori dessert is a summer-exclusive standout in the sweet menu: a fluffy Yatsugatake “Kuramoto Yatsuyoshi Natural Ice” slowly frozen using traditional freezing methods that result in a powdery, snow-like texture, then crowned with selections of peaches or strawberries. French toasts are topped with premium grapes like the seedless Kyoho and Piones, and desserts are plated with Gallic precisions that are too pretty to eat — but far too delicious to resist.
The seating overlooks the magnificent grounds of Kego Shrine in a space designed with the brief of part minimalist and every bit of elegant interior. Then there is the terrace, which overlooks a lush park in the breezy downtown area but remains a quaint pocket amidst the crowd. In other words, this might just be the most stylish spot for a lazy afternoon tete-a-tete.

If the saying holds true: three years to master the art of skewering the unagi, eight for the splitting and a lifetime for the grilling — then the chef of this restaurant is a true devotee.
