Japanese festivals are joyful, energetic events that bring local communities together and keep traditions alive. This one-time byFood original experience gives you a rare opportunity to take part in one such unique local festival in Minato, a ward in central Tokyo that is home to Tokyo Tower. Dressed in traditional attire, you'll join the Matsuzaka-cho Mikoshi Festival, carrying a mikoshi portable shrine, interacting with neighbors, and strolling through yatai street stalls to try festival foods and games guided by a friendly byFood guide in this one-time event on Sunday, September 8th, 2024.
You'll meet your host at Shirokane-Takanawa Station at noon before heading to a changing room to wear a happi coat and split-toe tabi socks. You'll then have time to interact with locals and get to know each other before the festival starts. At around 13:00, you'll join the procession carrying the mikoshi (portable shrine) towards the main shrine. These portable shrines are believed to carry thedeities and are only taken out of the main shrine and paraded around the city during festivals.
You'll be fully immersed in the festive atmosphere as you shoulder the mikoshi alongside locals. Before you know it, you'll have arrived at the shrine, and the mikoshi procession will end. But the fun will only have begun! It'll then be time to explore the vibrant yatai stalls and indulge in sizzling festival foods and traditional games. Your host will be by your side throughout the afternoon, ensuring smooth communication and creating unforgettable memories. Don't miss out on the opportunity to join this unique local celebration.

Remarks
Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing to carry the portable shrine.
The portable shrine can be heavy, so this experience is not recommended for those with physical impediments or prone to shoulder and leg pain.
Children are welcome to join but might not be able to carry the portable shrine.
