Experience Details
To Tokyo locals, an evening stop at a favorite izakaya is the perfect breather. These bars are the perfect setting for a few hours of casual eating and drinking with friends, where the usual rules of quiet Japanese society shift to encourage laughter and fun. Visit a few izakayas in one night and you’ll experience Japanese-style bar hopping, known as hashigozake, which translates to “alcohol ladder”.
On this Tokyo bar-hopping tour, your local guide will take you through the streets of Akabane. With neon signs, countless izakaya and old-school style buildings, Akabane transports you back in time to Japan’s retro Showa-era of the 1900s, and is strikingly different from the more “touristy” sites of the city. What’s particularly special about this area’s nightlife is the senbero scene, casual, lower-priced izakaya bars.
You’ll meet your guide at the east entrance of Akabane Station before beginning your tour. After exploring the area, you’ll get to choose which senbero izakaya to visit first. Your guide will help you order food and drink (which is included in the tour cost) and then teach you a few tips to drink like a local.
At each stop on this Akabane bar-hopping tour, you’ll get to taste different drinks and specialty dishes, surrounded by authentic Japanese drinking culture. Before finishing, your guide will take you either back to the station or drop you at a nearby bar to continue exploring.
