Experience Details

Why is matcha such a worldwide sensation, and how can you find the perfect kind for you or learn to make it yourself? In this sensory matcha experience, you'll sample several different types of matcha while learning all about this tea's unique history and culture from a former Kyoto tea farmer specializing in matcha cultivation and history.

Your host will start by introducing the different cultivation methods and sharing the history and cultural relevance of matcha in Japan. You'll then taste eight different kinds of tea, noticing the difference in bitterness, body and aroma, sourced from five major producing regions in Japan (Kyoto, Shizuoka, Aichi, Fukuoka, Kagoshima).

Six will be ceremonial-grade matcha, the type served in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, and the remaining two will be other kinds of teas mistakenly sold as matcha. Notice the subtle differences between each and understand the nuances in flavors and aroma as you learn to distinguish real matcha from other similar teas.

After the tasting session, you’ll choose your favorite variety among the ones you tried during the tasting and learn to prepare it yourself. Following the original way to prepare matcha using a bamboo whisk, your host will guide you in uncovering the secrets to achieving a perfectly frothy broth and unlocking matcha's powerful flavor.

You'll also receive practical tips to make matcha properly, which you can use anytime. You'll end the experience on a sweet note: with a refreshingly tasty matcha latte! Enjoy sipping on an original blend that goes well with milk and sugar alongside matcha or hojicha sweets, and feel free to ask your host any final questions about the fascinating world of Japanese green tea.
