Experience Details

You can learn to make two different delicious snacks during this specialty Katsuniman and Steamed Gyoza Cooking Class in Tochigi. This cooking class is held at Tsurumi Shokudo, a restaurant that is nationally famous for its specialty katsudon dish (better known as deliciously fried pork cutlet over a bed of rice). As an even more convenient and absolutely delicious snack, they have also invented their specialty dish called “katsuniman.” If you’re wondering what they are made from, it is pork cutlet filling inside a delicious Chinese-inspired steamed bun. Ingenious!

Jump in and learn how to make katsuniman as well as steamed dumplings at Tsurumi’s Tochigi shop during this cooking class. Originally established during the early 1960s, Tsurumi Restaurant started out as a family-run restaurant but has now been selling their unique recipe for well over 50 years, including their delicious sauce (or “tare” in Japanese!) Now with branches all over the country, the signature flavor of Tsurumi katsudon is simply unforgettable and remains popular across generations.

You will learn how to make your cutlet using ingredients like locally-grown pork, local onions with a sweet flavor, and delicious fresh eggs. Making the steamed katsu sauce will take about 20 minutes, then it will take 20 minutes to steam. In the meantime, you will learn how to prepare your steamed dumplings while the katsu takes time to cook to perfection. This involves filling and wrapping your Chinese buns using Tsurumi’s signature rice flour dough (giving a fluffy texture that is moist when steamed). This part of the cooking class takes about 30 minutes. Finally, everything is ready and you can either eat your delicious katsudon or take it home with you. Plus, you will receive an apron with Tsurumi’s katsuniman character on it as an ultra kawaii souvenir!
